The Good, the Bad and the Curly

I can’t believe I’m about to do this, but I’m going to blog about my hair. I recently caught an early showing of Chris Rocks’s new documentary “Good Hair,” which is hilarious and actually quite thoughtful. Well, as a long-suffering memeber of the Curly-Haired Club, I TOTALLY related. I, too, have been haunted by pictures of celebrity women with their long, flowing, luscious locks. The Gwenyth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston’s of the world, with their long, shiny, pin-straight hair give me particular grief. Granted, my hair woes aren’t as painful as some, but make no mistake, I’ve served my share of time in Bad Hair Hell.

Observe, Exhibit A:

cousins

That’s me, front row on the right in the orange dress at my aunt and uncle’s wedding. Apparently, I’m not only deeply disturbed by my sherbert-colored attire, but also by my little Amish-boy hairstyle. A classic late bloomer, even my HAIR was slow to develop.

Exibit B:

softball

This is sometime in the mid-80’s, as you can see by my proper feathering technique.

 Exhibit C:

cheerleading

This would be a “take-no-prisoners” kind of look–big hair, big hoops and big braces.

Exhibit D:

senior pic

My senior picture and the general style I wore for most of high school–the brown, curly football helmut.

Exhibit E:

pregnant

Full, frizzy and fat with child. Perhaps my theory was that bigger body=bigger hair?

Exhibit F:

bald

My Sinead stint. It was a dare. And believe it or not, my husband was the one who shaved it. (But how cute, I match my kid!)

Exhibit G:

post-baby

Still growing it out from the shaving incident. I’d just had a baby and apparently, some really bad highlights (and possible case of the flu by the looks of it?)

Exhibit H:

wig

Okay, not really my hair, but still a funny picture.

Exhibit I:

side shot

Whoa. Step AWAY from the flat iron before somebody gets hurt.

And last, a picture of my hair today:

megan fox

As you can see, it was, um, taken from a really good angle.  Happy hair day to all!

  1. Very cute, Kali!
I think any of us who grew up in the 80’s can relate to the feathered look or the big hair look! My big hair traveled well into the 90’s – and you know what? I PAID to have mine big and curly! Think about all the $$ you saved by having naturally curly hair! Lucky you!

  2. Love the run down! Although not curly, I’ve never had good hair either. One January in the not too distant past, one of my New Year’s resolutions was to “get better hair”. Still on my list….

  3. The younger shots were cute and the fact that you were so young in the 80’s makes me feel older. I really kind of liked your shaved head look. I guess you look good no matter how you wear your hair. It was good seeing you the other night. Hope your writing is going well and look forward to future stuff.
